University Establishment and Historical Overview
The University of Basra for Oil and Gas was established by Ministerial Order No. (1170) in 2014, becoming the first Iraqi university specializing in the oil and gas sector. Located in Basra Governorate, the university began with an ambitious staff and started with the College of Petroleum and Gas Engineering (2013/2014) and its various departments. It later expanded to include the College of Industrial Management for Oil and Gas (2017/2018) and its departments.
Since its inception, the university has focused on intellectual development, openness to the experiences of international and local universities, and preparing qualified professionals capable of innovation and development.
The university works to strengthen ties with Iraqi, Arab, international, and local scientific bodies, empowering Iraqi society to engage with technological advancements and providing opportunities for in-depth specialization to meet the country's needs. Today, the university's graduates form the core of the oilfield workforce, emphasizing that the integration of engineering and management is the future of the oil industry. University Colleges and Academic Departments
The university currently comprises two leading colleges:
1. College of Petroleum and Gas Engineering
The College of Petroleum and Gas Engineering at the University of Basrah for Oil and Gas is the first Iraqi government-run academic institution specializing in the fields of the oil and energy industry. Established in the 2013-2014 academic year, the college aims to provide the oil sector in Basrah Governorate (the economic capital of Iraq) with highly qualified engineers. The college includes several specialized academic departments, contributing to the development of engineering professionals capable of meeting the demands of the energy sector job market. These departments include:
1. Department of Petroleum and Gas Engineering: specializing in the exploration, drilling, and management of oil and gas reservoirs and production methods.
2. Department of Chemical Engineering and Petroleum Refining: concerned with oil refining processes, gas treatment, and the design and operation of refineries.
3. Department of Gas and Petrochemical Process Engineering: focusing on the petrochemical and polymer industries.
2. College of Industrial Management for Oil and Gas
The College of Industrial Management for Oil and Gas is one of the specialized scientific colleges at the University of Basrah for Oil and Gas, established in 2017. The college accepts graduates from both the biological and applied sciences branches and aims to prepare qualified personnel with diverse scientific and administrative skills, particularly in the oil sector and related industries. It also strives to meet labor market demands by training students capable of keeping pace with modern developments in the fields of management and the oil industry. The college includes several specialized academic departments, including:
1. Department of Oil and Gas Management and Marketing: This department specializes in training students to understand the dynamics of energy resource production and marketing, and to analyze oil markets.
2. Department of Oil and Gas Economics: This department focuses on economic feasibility studies, oil investment, and the development of economic policies related to energy.
3. Department of Oil Project Management: This department is concerned with the planning, implementation, and evaluation of engineering and production projects in the oil sector with high efficiency.
4. Department of Oil Accounting: This department focuses on the accounting and financial systems applied in oil and gas companies and institutions.
