Foundation and Brief History
University of Basrah for Oil and Gas was established during the academic year (2013–2014) with the inauguration of the College of Oil and Gas Engineering, which initially included two specialized scientific departments: the Department of Oil and Gas Engineering and the Department of Chemical Engineering and Petroleum Refining. In its first academic year, the college welcomed (152) students from high school science graduates, making it the first specialized Iraqi university in the fields of oil, gas, and energy.
As part of its strategic plan for academic expansion and to meet the needs of the energy sector, the university witnessed a new phase of development in the academic year (2017–2018) marked by the establishment of the College of Industrial Management for Oil and Gas, comprising the following scientific departments: Department of Oil and Gas Management and Marketing, Department of Oil and Gas Economics, and Department of Petroleum Projects Management.
During the same academic year, the Department of Polymers and Petrochemicals Engineering was established as the third scientific department in the College of Oil and Gas Engineering, supporting modern engineering specialties related to petroleum and petrochemical industries.
Continuing its academic development path, the academic year (2025–2026) witnessed the establishment of the Department of Petroleum Accounting, becoming the fourth scientific department in the College of Industrial Management for Oil and Gas, thereby enhancing integration between engineering, administrative, and financial specialties required by the oil and gas sector.
As part of updating and developing academic programs to align with scientific advancements and labor market needs, the name of the Department of Polymers and Petrochemicals Engineering in the College of Oil and Gas Engineering was changed during the academic year (2025–2026) to the Department of Gas Processing and Petrochemicals Engineering, reflecting the evolution in the nature and modern scientific directions of the specialization.
Since its inception, the university has prioritized building a rigorous academic and research system based on quality standards and academic accreditation, working to strengthen cooperation with local, regional, and international universities and scientific institutions to exchange expertise, transfer modern knowledge and technology, and develop scientific research and innovation.
The university also strives to prepare qualified scientific, engineering, and administrative cadres possessing the efficiency, knowledge, and skills required to keep pace with rapid developments in the energy sector and contribute to achieving sustainable development goals in Iraq. University graduates have proven their distinguished presence in state institutions and the public and private sectors, particularly in the oil and gas industry, forming a vital pillar in supporting national industry and economic development in line with the university's vision of achieving integration between engineering and administrative disciplines to serve the future of the energy sector.
